Trabant, Berlin Wall

Berlin

Berlin can be defined as the city of black and white. It is made up of luxurious areas, business buildings, imposing cathedrals, clean streets but also not very pleasant areas, where the imprint of the war can still be seen. The city went through extreme periods: fascism, communism. It was 90% destroyed and rebuilt after World War II.

The Berlin Wall is still standing. In fact, the wall was used only to slow the population from the east to migrate west, not to stop them. What stopped them were the mines, patrols or snipers who watched every movement in the wall area. The most impressive area of the wall is what they call the “East-West-Side Gallery.” Here you can still see the optimistic works of art left after the fall of the wall. The Berlin Wall had 3 checkpoints. Alpha, Beta and Charlie. The best known is “Charlie”, the one where Communists and Americans used to stay so close than they can see each one’s gestures.

The Parliament House or total transparency. The House of Parliament has a glass dome above where you can see the entire parliament and much of the city. It is suspected that Hitler and his men set fire to the building, went to the president and convinced him that the communists had in fact done so. He offers to start a war of revenge with the communists. The president gave him full power, and so Hitler began arrests and murders.

The Jews. In the center of Berlin there is a very interesting memorial dedicated to the Holocaust and the Jews. It is made up of many stone cubes of different sizes, together forming a kind of labyrinth. The feeling you have if you walk through this labyrinth of stones is fear, disorientation. You feel lost in the world. Mostly, like jews used to feel at that time. The location was chosen precisely to attract attention, for people to do their own research of the past and ask questions. That’s because the Germans do not hide the past. It shows you the good and the bad.

The Trabant was a luxury car. In his day, you waited over 20 years to get one. Many Germans signed for their children. When someone who owned a trabant went on vacation, he filled it with up to 6 people.

I liked Berlin. I only stayed 2 days but slept 8 hours. Otherwise, I went on tours, I visited museums, I learned a lot of things. I didn’t write them all because I don’t like writing very long posts. Berlin has been added to the list of cities I would move to, if I could afford it.
