Albania. That was the new country for this year’s birthday celebration. I’d never set foot here before, which is a bit mad when you think how remarkably close it is to Romania, my home country. And it wasn’t just the geographical proximity that struck me; there was something in the air, the people, the flavours of the food, even the contours of the landscape, that echoed with a comforting familiarity, bringing me unexpectedly closer to home.
Today, I found myself particularly grateful for the simple magic of a stunning sunset. The light was just extraordinary, painting the sky and bathing Florence and Alex’s faces in the most beautiful, warm glow. It might just have been the best birthday I’ve had.
And then there was their surprise – an incredibly thoughtful video they’d put together, sharing 40 reasons why they love me. Watching it was an emotional rollercoaster; some reasons had me chuckling away, while many, if I’m honest, brought a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes.
So yes, I’ve just hit the big four-zero. But life really begins at 40, or so the saying goes, eh? We shall see!
