Via Transilvanica #2

The call of the Via Transilvanica pulled me back again. This time, the target was a stretch through Bucovina, starting with the familiar car journey from Bucharest up to Vatra Dornei, buzzing with that pre-hike mix of excitement and nerves.

Setting off from Vatra Dornei, the first couple of days were about finding that hiking rhythm amidst ridiculously green hills. It’s always a blend – the beauty, the sweat, the simple focus on the path ahead. Bucovina unfolded its charm, demanding effort but paying back generously in views and fresh air.

Lunca Ilvei served as a much-needed pit stop – a day to pause, breathe, and let the muscles forgive the previous days’ work. Sometimes the best part of moving is the moment you allow yourself to be still.

Recharged, the trail continued towards the heart of the VT project itself – Tasuleasa Social. Reaching the place where it all began adds a special layer to the walk. The following days pushed us onward through Bistrita Bargaului towards the finish line in Dorolea. This latter half felt like steady work, fuelled by the approaching end goal.

Covering roughly 107km in 5 walking days, finishing in Dorolea felt fantastic. Each section of the Via has its own character, and this Bucovina slice was stunning. It’s more than just walking; it’s reconnecting – with nature, with Romania, and maybe a bit with yourself too. Packed with memories, the ride back to Bucharest felt like returning from a different world.

Until the next section!
