What I learned from my 5 weeks trip to SE Asia

Travel light (er)! On this trip I had a small troller and an even smaller backpack. I didn’t have a lot of clothes. The mechanism worked, but it was as if I could give up the troller, which was too much. I also had a lot of thick clothes, such as jeans, sweatshirts, jackets, clothes that I didn’t use at all and that I couldn’t throw away. Next time I think I’ll just get my backpack. Saves a lot of time and stress. Especially if you have 15 flights in 5 weeks.

Get a financial back up! In none of my trips for more than a month I didn’t have all the money from the beginning. That’s because I work remotely and most of the time I travel and earn during this time. The problem is, you don’t always earn on time. What happened in Asia. I had all kinds of struggles with money and I had days when I had to tighten my belt. Next time: 100% trip financing. What comes over is welcome.

Be more flexible! With you, with people, with places. I know you left home with a plan, and when you get there it’s not exactly as you imagined. We, humans, are made to adapt. When you travel travel, success is about accepting and adapting. Enjoy what you have, even if it’s not perfect. I had locations where I realized when I arrived that I had not enough time to see all. Or too much time. But I adapted and tried to take advantage of every second when I had too few, or “jump” over seconds when I had too many. Same with people. I resonated with some, but not with all of them. At the end, we all managed to live together.

Live in the present moment! When you travel, when you have a high-end job or when you have a business, you are always tempted to plan your next step. We all do that. And we are all wrong. We must live in the present moment, enjoy the place or the people around us now. I know it’s hard not to think about the next flight, or the next accommodation, or the next goal. But what is happening now is much more important than what is happening tomorrow. Tomorrow we will live the present of tomorrow. Until then, let’s live the present of today.
